Largely overlooked by the skinlight, Mare Winningham is nonetheless famous for being a singing, song-writing, acting icon of the past four decades (seriously, her acting resume is over 40” long on the IMDb). Loosely affiliated with the widely exposed group of post-boomer acting kids known as the Brat Pack, Mare was the first of that bunch to receive an Oscar nomination; she picked up the nod for her stunning performance in the film Georgia (1995). The talented star actually did all her own vocals in the film, in which she plays a famous folk singer. Quite the coincidence, since in her breast-baring movie debut, a young and fresh-faced, fresh-skinned Mare played a waitress with aspirations of becoming a singer. In One Trick Pony (1980), the star’s character Modeena Dandridge is sitting opposite Paul Simon’s Jonah, and is squeaky clean of bubbles and wardrobe, revealing one beautiful globe, and one damp tendril of hair with a curl on the end, like an arrow pointing right to her perfectly pink pert nipple. More recent fans will recognize the mega-star from her television series roles as Hazel Evers on American Horror Story in 2015-2016; Cherry Lockhart in The Affair in 2014, 2015 and 2018; and Jeannie Anderson The Outsider in 2020, as well as movie spots in Dark Waters(2019) as Darlene Kiger, as Doris Boudlin in News of the World (2020), and All My Puny Sorrows (2022) as Lottie. And even though her skinematic appearances are minimal, we still have to put this prolific actress in the totally cool category, simply because she was smart enough to star in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985), the movie that carried the ingenious line, courtesy of co-star Rob Lowe, “It ain’t a party ’til something gets broken!”
